End of ASF in Russia – 12.06.2009

After a month without a reported case of African swine fever (ASF), the veterinary authorities have declared the event resolved to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The Russian veterinary authority has sent Follow up Report No. 18 dated 9 June to OIE, reporting no new cases of ASF in pigs for the last month. As a result, the event is described as 'resolved'.

The source of the outbreaks was thought to be contact with wild species. A ban on import and export of agricultural products was applied. Seromonitoring in farm animals within a five-kilometre radius was carried out, and all results were negative. Widespread shooting and destruction of wild pigs were carried out. After the completion of this campaign, an additional monitoring in wild fauna will be conducted in the region.
