Ukraine: buckwheat deficit to total 60 thsd tonnes – 06.09.2010

Vasiliy Sukhiy, the First Deputy Chairman of Ukrainian Farming Democratic Party, announced that buckwheat deficit in Ukraine will total 60 thsd tonnes.

Every year, Ukraine decreases buckwheat sowing areas, and due to the fact, to date, the country feels buckwheat yield decrease, noted the representative of the Party.

According to him, in 2010 buckwheat sowing areas totaled 215 thsd ha, as opposed to 273 thsd ha in 2009, and 425 thsd ha in 2005.

According to the forecast of experts, buckwheat production will total 160 thsd tonnes in 2010, which will allow to produce 90 thsd tonnes of buckwheat groats. At the same time, buckwheat groats domestic consumption in Ukraine totals 150 thsd tonnes per year, noted V.Suhij.
