Ukraine. Agriculture Ministry: Shortage of sugar in 2011 may reach 300,000 tons – 06.09.2010

The sugar beet harvesting campaign in Ukraine will start earlier than scheduled due to bad weather, and the condition of sugar beets is the same as in 2009, the Agriculture Ministry has told UKRINFORM, citing Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk.

Last year, the yield of sugar beets in Ukraine amounted to 314 centners per ton. With an increase in the sowing area to 480,000 hectares this year, its gross production will not exceed 15.1 million tons, and storage volumes 13.5 million tons.

In this case, experts predicted that the production of beet sugar in Ukraine might reach 1.75 million tons, which would not ensure the country's domestic needs.

It is expected that in 2011, as part of its commitments to the World Trade Organization, Ukraine will import at least 300,000 tons of raw sugar under the duty of 2% in order to cover shortages on the domestic market.
