Ukraine harvests 29.5 million tons of grain as of August 31 – 02.09.2010

Ukrainian farmers as of August 31 harvested 29.5 million tons of grain and leguminous crops on an area of 11.9 million hectares (81% of the forecast), with an average yield being 24.7 quintals per hectare, the Ukrainian Agriculture Ministry has reported.

A total of 108,000 tons of buckwheat was threshed from an area of 126,000 hectares (59%), with an average yield being 8.6 quintals per hectare. Farmers also harvested 108,000 tons of millet on an area of 71,000 hectares (81%), with an average yield being 15.3 quintals per hectare, and 395,000 tons of corn from an area of 99,000 hectares (4%), with an average yield being 39.8 quintals per hectare.

In addition, Ukraine threshed 191,000 tons of sunflower seeds from an area of 127,000 hectares (3%), with an average yield being 15.1 quintals per hectare.

Farmers have begun harvesting sugar beets. A total of 170,000 tons of sugar beets were harvested on an area of 6,000 hectares (1%), with an average yield being 300 centners per hectare.

Ukraine also harvested 57,000 tons of soybeans from an area of 40,000 hectares (4%), with an average yield being 14.4 quintals per hectare.
