Forum 2008 "Agri-Food Business: Global Challenges-Innovative Solutions" IAMO June 25-27 – 17.05.2008

The IAMO Forum 2008 will focus on three global challenges considered to be of major importance for developments in both the agri-food sector and its economic and political environment:

• Food quality
• Bio-energy
• Redefinition of Agricultural Policy

The world is currently experiencing changes in consumer demand – a result of both higher incomes and concerns over product safety and quality. In order to meet the new required quality, minimum quality standards are rising and private standards emerging. These developments cause adjustments at the enterprise, chain and market levels. At the same time, the tremendously increasing demand for renewable energy has led to the emergence of a highly promising market for biomass production. This has far-reaching consequences for resource allocation in the agri-food business, for the environment, and for agricultural policy reforms. The challenges increase with ongoing liberalisation, globalisation and standardisation, all of which change trade patterns for agricultural and food commodities, and influence production costs and commodity prices. In the same way, the continuing expansion and deregulation tendencies of the European Union are redefining the challenges for business operators - not least of all in Europe. Thus, the issue for enterprises deciding to participate at the global or local agri-business level is whether and how to adapt their strategy to the changing operational environment. Their success depends on the ability to find innovative solutions with regard to the organisation of enterprises, chains, and markets, as well as future policy design.

The primary objective of the 2008 IAMO Forum is to organise a multidisciplinary discussion on the above-mentioned issues in Europe and Asia. The conference will provide a forum for discussing achievements, options and future needs related to scientifically supporting the ongoing adjustments in the agri-food sector.

 The conference will particularly address:

• Structural changes on traditional markets
• Emerging markets such as bio energy
• Management strategies to meet new demands
• Changing trade patterns
• Challenges for future agricultural policy debates (e.g. Doha, CAP).

IAMO invites researchers and decision-makers from all over Europe and beyond to present their views and results, and to participate in the discussion.
